    Electric "module" in propane unit.

Put the finishing touch on my PID today. Added a K coupler jack to the box, and a male plug to the probe. And grabbed a 15 foot K extension from the same place. This will allow me to keep the controller in the garage and the smoker out on the walk in the winter or rain. Just need to do something...

    Covers for Carnivore Grinders

I have a Joanne's nearby, I'll check it out, thanks

    Covers for Carnivore Grinders

Didn't think of that either. I was thinking of a more thicker cover fabric. But really I only need it to keep the dust off while it's stored on the bottom of my rolling work table.

    Covers for Carnivore Grinders

Thanks. I have a machine, I'll probably pop into a fabric store this weekend to see what kind of vinyl type material they have. Would like to have something "cleanable" in case it gets anything on it.

    Covers for Carnivore Grinders

Has anybody found a decent cover for these grinders? I just picked up a 3/4hp #12 this weekend, it will likely just be stored on the bottom shelf of my stainless table. Would like to just store it assembled with a cover on it, but Cabelas doesn't seem to make one. I've seen some "universal"...

Getting ready to build first PID...

So everything seems to be working as it should. The thermocouple is off so I need to get that calibrated. The end on that thermocouple is so short I don't want to try to calibrate with water and risk killing the thermocouple. So I made up a jig to put my maverick (spot on temp wise) side by...

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

1 3/4" square and about 3 1/2" deep. There's a video on YouTube of a guy doing one in a plastic ammo can.

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

Box cut, and parts mounted. There are a couple options I want to add in the future, but I need to try and find answers to a couple questions before I implement those. Back into the oven later to test the pid operation in a similar environment to the smoker. The outlet on the right is...

    Electric Double Stack Oven Build

Were you running the same voltage before and after cutting? Did you decide to go with 120 or 220v? A 220v rated element only runs at I think it's 1/4 the wattage when you are running it from a 120v source.

Getting ready to build first PID...

This is the temp of the top of the heatsink after about 30 minutes of the element being full on. And this is the temp at the very bottom fins of the heatsink where it has the holes to mount it to the box. No thermal compound installed for these pics, but I just found a syringe of the good...

Getting ready to build first PID...

Thanks for the responses. I'm a bit rusty on my ohm math but it's a 120v 1000w element, I think that works out to about an 8.3 amp draw. That copy perfectly explained what I was seeing. I was seeing line voltage with nothing plugged into the outlet, and the 94 volts with just the plug in...

Getting ready to build first PID...

Well the original question got zero response, am I asking on the wrong place? Anyway, on to a new question. Is it normal for the SSR in a pid system to have a higher than zero voltage when not calling for power, but not high enough to operate? I ask because with a tester plugged into the...

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

Well. On to the bench testing of pid parts. Learned spring tonight. That even when the temp is satisfied, there must be a small amount of current young through the SSR. When I had a lamp plugged in, it just clicks on and off. I put an electrical tester in the outlet, when the tap is above where...

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

Lol. Next time I'll spend the extra money to get a carbon felt blanket. That cheapo fiberglass was super easy to stitch but that crap gets everywhere when working with it.

Thanks man. I'm really happy with the way the welding blanket turned out. A bit easier to use than just draping it over and having to pull it off every time I need to get in he cook chamber.

    Nice work on those.

Getting ready to build first PID...

So I've got another thread going on the "other builds" forum about running a hotplate in my gasser for doing low temp stuff like sausage etc. I've got a pretty firm grasp on what I need to do to get the pid wired, just need to get the parts ordered. My question is about mounting the SSR and...

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

Finished stitching in the top and bottom velcro tabs tonight. Closes up pretty well. Started gathering the local parts for the pid case as well. Leaving for a trip late next week, so not sure if I'll order the rest of the parts before or after my trip. Snatched an old power cord from work...

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

I got rid of my last 50cal and 30cal cans to a friend not too long ago. But you're probably right. I've seen a lot of guys using plastic junction boxes from Menards. Probably just going to use one of those, just don't know what I'm going to do about the heat sink for the SSR in a plastic box.
