Air movement advice needed - Ok Joe/Mod/Auto fan

To answer your actual question (sorry), the blower would likely increase the flow, move heat from inlet, into cooking chamber and out the chimney. You would be "forcing" past the problems. Just my opinion.

Air movement advice needed - Ok Joe/Mod/Auto fan

Based on my experience with the OK Joe Highland, your 3" chimney, is probably 3" outside diameter, less inside. I fabricated a new chimney, to fit around the round outlet hole in the cooking chamber. so it increased the volume exiting. As well, I made a baffle on the inside, lowering it down...

New - Oklahoma Joe's Highland Smoker

"Food Safe" is a strict designation.  It means the product, it's source material, and how it's produced meets tight FDA standards, which include coming into contact with the food, itself.   I don't think anyone here is going to flat-out tell you it's 100% OK,  because everyone usually errs on...

    Yet another OK Joe Highland

Sounds like you have it under control!  Good Luck!  Let us know how it goes.

    Yet another OK Joe Highland

Nice job!  Looks great! Without a baffle and no tuning plates, or convection plates, you can expect a hot spot on the firebox side, what most of us just call uneven temperature across the grate area. It's not a killer as long as you manage it, and rotate the food's position, especially on...

Yes, you can certainly just pile charcoal on the firebox grate and go for it.  The basket just makes fire management easier, and allows for a longer burn, etc.  My opinion is, even if you don't use sealant, you should be able to cook with it.  Whether you do seal it or not, I would recommend a...

New - Oklahoma Joe's Highland Smoker

I don't think the OKJ is manufactured for a "drop in" rotisserie. I don't see aything on their website. I do see some aftermarket rotisserie kits on line, you'd have to drill holes and set-up for your own installation.  Also, grill spits have shorter rods.  I did see an aftermarket 42" rod by...

OK Joe Highland (and Longhorn) Mods and Effects- please add yours

MY original top thermometer may not be accurate, but it usually reads  lower than the two down by the grill grate.  I don't trust the top one, but have not done the boiling water test to check it. Question: Have you extended your stack down to grate level?   If your stack is not modified, that...

Good deal.  You can find 5/8" round rod at Lowes and HD, for a full width axle.  From HF, used the solid rubber 8" tires, but the 10" inflatable ones are nice and plush.

Dave, I actually installed the handles opposite, added a thru axle and better wheels, s it was 4 wheeled, with handles.  Removeable handles makes good sense, I had thought about that, maybe using pipe, and then handles that slid into the pipe, like telescoping.  if you will be wheeling it...

Yes, the curvature of the doors affects the seal.  I agree, if you seal 90% of the leakage, that should make all the difference.  I went with toggle latches on the CC, but not the FB.  I used the Nomex sealing material, and I'd say I got all areas except those where the inner metal band was...

I am going to attempt to list my OKJ Highland modifications, reasons, and observations. There are many helpful threads throughout these forums dealing with the Oklahoma Joe smokers, perhaps we can compile some information here in a running thread to assist everyone who is using, modding, and...

    OK Joe Highland Reverse Flow

JD,  as far as PROS and CONS,  the only CON that comes to mind, over the regular models is the higher cost. Beyond that, as you stated, the Reverse Flow model gives you extra latitude, if it works as stated.  I just got my OKJ Highland right after Christmas, did not even know about a Reverse...

    OK Joe Highland Reverse Flow

I have been in two of the big box stores recently  that carry OKJ's (Highland and LongHorn) and have not seen a Reverse Flow model in their inventory.  I would suspect the big stores probably buy bulk shipments, perhaps seasonally, so we may not see the reverse flow models actually hit the...

New - Oklahoma Joe's Highland Smoker

I cheated.  A friend of mine is the sheet metal guru, is in thr business and even does architectural roofing restoration. So I used leftovers in 18ga. SS sheet to fabricate my convection plate and FB baffle.  It's been raining last two days, I'll snap some pics when I am able. Drilled...

    Leftover Ash

I screen sift my woodstove and BBQ smoker ash and reclaim the small chunks of charcoal, that can be burned as fuel again.  If not, no biggie, charcoal can be beneficial to compost, garden and lawn. Mostly the ash I scoop goes directly  into the compost pile and gets turned in. I try to mix it...

New - Oklahoma Joe's Highland Smoker

Look at it this way,  its only 6 bolts? or 8?    Hint:  make a small table, like with cinder blocks or something, directly under the firebox, unbolt, and set it down just a few inches on your makeshift table. Move it away just enough to apply the RTV around the opening, and around each bolt...

Tell Me about Making and Using CharWood

Background:  I cut firewood in my area, and have access to Oak, Cherry, and a few others. As i process the firewood (for the woodstove) I toss aside chunks of heartwood for drying and later use in the smoker. I use wood chunks more than chips and mix with charcoal in a charcoal basket, minion...

    Field maple

I have cut a lot of firewood here in the Mid Atlantic region of the US.  Had not heard of "field maple".  Just looked it up, it appears to be a UK/European species, so, it will take someone over there to speak to it's food cooking ability.   It looks like people may tap it for syrup?  So that...
