When I built my UDS I couldn't find a lid anywhere, so I used a tub and flipped it over and added a handle and vent. Here are some pics with a smoked pork loin using apple wood. it could not have been any more tender.
Here is my prototype build. I didn't use the 1'' nipple on the bottom. I used replacement Weber vents. Three around the bottom which I know now is overkill.
If I can get a decent barrel which I started with then it took me about 10 hours. That is after I did two burns. Now mind you this isn't with finished paint, just four coats of high temp paint from a can.
I found a local place that I can get good used barrels for $ 40 that come with a lid. After doing a prototype of my own ( needs some adjustments) I believe I have around $100-$130 in it. So say $130 and $40 isn't bad if I can get between $200-$250. I just really believe if people saw these...

It's a UDS I built. I don't know if it's a problem. I was just wondering if the plate having holes in it was right or not and since it is only 16 inches will it deflect enough heat in a 55 gallon drum.
I use a 16" deflector plate ( Pizza Pan) that has small holes in it. Could this be a problem, or does it matter? I picked it up at Walmart and the holes are only about 1/8 inch.
