I agree with all of the above.
Those of us whom I would consider have significant use of the SDHD, learned quickly and know it's quirks, limitations, and how to get the best results with it, as well as how to inadvertently end up with the biggest messes with it.
As already mentioned...
While I also would have skipped the Heavy D, I still find use for it as a sturdier diffuser.
At any rate I'm glad to hear that the new Magnum P.I.G setup is working for the both of you.
If you think that's academic, well then the position that a non PID controlled pellet grill yields better smoke flavor than a PID controlled pellet grill, and by extension is "better" in regard to taste difference is really academic.
But we hear that myth thrown around all the time, and...
No doubt, dollars dictate. They’re in a competitive market.
And by making this move, it also appears, or seems to indicate, that they probably aren’t too worried about an overwhelming majority of prospective customers, repeat or second time pellet grill purchasers, critics and reviewers...
I'm not surprised by this move at all.
I guess they have decided to stop trying to promote the "wild temperature swings are actually good because they result in more smoke" sales pitch.
Looks like Camp Chef is doing the same thing. Going PID.
Nobody wants to spend the better part of a...
There was a lot of talk in here earlier in the summer about PID vs non PID controllers.
It's interesting to see that more and more pellet grill manufacturers are going to PID controllers.
Traeger? Not unless you want to expose yourself to a similar problem next Thanksgiving.
It's Rec Tec time.
Your story above, is the exact reason why I would avoid pellet smokers from big box and home improvement stores.
Rec Tec 590 Stampede.
I have two AMAZIN smoke tubes. One twelve inch, one 18 inch.
The 12 inch has the U bolt. I was running pellets in the 12 and dust in the 18 telescoped down to 12 but I wasn't running it full.
I propped it against the 12. This served a similar purpose to the U bolt...
I'm trying out the dust for the first time today.
I used a Ninja blender to make it and just poured it into a 12 inch tube about halfway full and lit it.
It does give a TBS outside of the smoker, but once inside of it, I had to take care to position it in such a way as to allow the tube to get...
I like cookinpellets too, but they are priced much higher than the Lumberjack pellets that I bought, and the flavor of the two, at least to my tastes, is about the same.
The cookinpellets perfect mix were about $38.00 plus shipping for a 40lb bag.
This was at the same time that the Lumberjack...
Try using it with no wood in it.
Your temperatures will likely be a lot more manageable.
As long as you don’t put any wood into the Smoke Daddy Heavy D, you won’t need any foil and you probably won’t need to prop open your lid.
However the minute you decide to put wood into the SDHD, all...
Yeah, I see what you mean.
You'd just shut your smoke valve off, take your cap off the burn canister, add fuel, once the fuel in your canister started to give off TBS, put your cap back on the canister and then reopen your smoke valve to release the TBS smoke into the cooking chamber.
You mean like a 3-way brass ball valve T-full port?
Something like this:

Well, if one just wanted to tinker, I don't see why that wouldn't work.
That would allow you to turn...
