I drilled a couple of holes in the side of the drum up near the top just big enough for the probe to slide through. Did the same thing on my Master Forge Gasser. The holes are not large enough to affect the temp.
Thanks Oldschool, I took it to a bodyshop and let them sandblast it. They charged me $75.00. I figured it was worth not having to burn it and then clean it. Came back home spotless.
Good luck! I painted mine over a couple of weekends. I should have said 1 can did 1 light coat, but I was worried about dripping, so I probably wasted some from being far enough away from the drum to avoid a run.

I have been looking at doing a small comp as well. Was going to enter the Southeast GA BBQ cook off in Waycross the first weekend in May, but they just canceled it. Send me a PM if you are interested. I just live an hour down the road from you.
