I've never used the chip tray in mine, just the AMNPS. No fuss no muss. If you get one you probably wear the thing out before you would want to get rid of it. Just a thought.
The stuff you have is "lath" it's meant to have stucco applied over it so it probably is galvanized. It's also pretty thin so when you burn off the coating it won't hold up very long. I'd take it back and go with the stuff in eman's post. Good luck.
It looks like you have the "Smoker" issue taken care of. As for the wife I have had the same problem. Solution----turn off the water to your house and when you find the problem and fix it she will be so happy to be able to flush the commode and take a shower that she will appreciate you so much...
