I thought I'd share some pics of the first drum smoker I built using recycled grill parts. I used a 18.5" Weber kettle for the fire bowl, four 4-hole daisy wheels for intake vents, a 22.5" cooking grate and a Weber vent in the lid.
It worked great and held steady temps for over 13 hours in below...
I've only done small briskets and corned beef, I should have done the packer on the drum (woulda, coulda, shoulda) instead of the Silver Smoker, but yeah the smoke rings are for real, you will be amazed!
This is homemade, only because I'm cheap and handy with a drill.
If you are interested in a BDS you should contact them, you will not be disappointed. These things are virtually hassle free and the results are fantastic.
MCOutlaw-I've never had to add charcoal, but I do have a rod that I use to give the charcoal basket a shake to drop some ash. My coals have always outlasted anything I've cooked.
cajunsmoker-The base is a steel 4 wheel drum dolly, from Harbor Freight, It is not attatched to the drum. The probes...
After fighting my Silver Smoker on Saturday, I needed to relax and do some Q'n on the Drum. It's a 38" tall steel barrell with two 22.5" cooking grates, most of the time I only use one grate but today I loaded it up with two 8lb butts and then a few hours later laid down 4 baby back racks and...
Allright! I was going to ask if there were any "Drum heads" here at SMF! And you got the jumbo too! Nice work Chad! You ain't kidding about the smell, I love it. Although I'm not a BDS owner, I do have a 38" drum with 2 cooking grates and have a turbo lid and a Weber lid that I use. I'll post...
Thanks for the reply tonto! I've got the gasket covered, and will be raising the coal grate and may have access to some fire bricks to take up some space in the bottom of the cook chamber.
Weather conditions were windy and drizzling rain, under cover and a makeshift windbreak. I was using a basket and Mesquite lump. Next time I'll use Kingsford briqs.
I would remove the burner and ignitor if your using a pressure washer or a hose. Heres another tip, I have a weed burner I use to fire up my BGE and Drum smokers and I removed the grate holders and hit the inside of the GOSM with the torch and the bubbly crud you referred to is easily scraped...
Well I fired it up on St. Paddys Day and things didn't go all that well for me. I had a hard time keeping the temps up even though I had a good fire going, it was a struggle. @16 hrs with a 10# brisket, at 2AM it was on 170* internal so I foiled and put in the cooler. Finished them off in my...
I just finished up the NB and did a few mods, baffle, lowered the vent, raised the fire grate, built a basket, added some wheels, thermometers at grate level, new handles and table slats and a paint job.
I did a couple mods to my WSM and thought you all might want to have a look.
I added the Genie garage door handles to the center section and they were begging to serve a dual purpose. I wanted something to put my remote probe and thermometers and maybe tongs or gloves on. Nothing heavy mind you...
Bill- If you can use drill you can build a drum smoker! Find an unlined 50 gallon drum with a lid, buy a step drill bit, a 22.5" cooking grid, some expanded steel, and some nuts and bolts and you'll be smokin in no time.
Any thoughts pro or con about using unfinished cherry moulding and oak trim for smoking? Or how about using it as a heat source with some lump in an offset?
I found a WSM on craigslist it had been used once and the people did not have the patience to use it again. It came with a cover, rib rack and welders gloves. I have yet to cook on it but have gotten a clay pot base, larger water pan and handles to add to it. Trying to decide which thermometer...
I had been searching for information on mods for a New Braunfels offset and people freely contacted me and gave me information and tips. If I'm on the BGE forum and a Kamado owner is looking for info on it I will try help offline if possible, People on other sites have posted info on their...
The sizes of the BDS are 35", 38" and 43". I took a walk around our shop and pump room measuring the drums and the ones we had were all 35" H x 23.5"W. I wasn't thinking about it at the time but if I wanted more space I could put my EZ-Que ring on the drum and gain 6" plus the Kettle lid and I...
Heres what I've done so far-I got a drum that has a lid and the painted interior, added 4 daisy wheel vents (Weber clone) and pop riveted them 3" from the bottom of drum with four 3/4" holes on each vent. Took a 18.5" Weber Bar-B-kettle and drilled a lot of 3/4" holes around it, added a 9" H...
