Welcome to the board from next door in Ohio! Yes the Webers can smoke well, so they make a good do-it-all smoker/grill. I'm running a 22 with the M date code on the top vent, meaning it's from 1990.
Have you fabricated fire-handling tools for it yet? Something to move fuel and ashes, able to reach to the back wall of the fire with some stand-back length to spare.
My sister had a Weber kettle. When we took the Tabasco factory tour, there was a gift shop selling bags of Tabasco wood chunkss for BBQ, for only $5.
I got a bag and showed them how to run their Weber as a smoker. The wood is rough chunks; it's retired oak aging barrels, run through a shredder...
Man I miss visiting Wisconsin. Did a lot of good camping there. Wandered the eskers in Kettle Moraine and been to a Door County fish boil. Those people know something about bratwurst, and beer.
It's very easy to carry a bow saw in your vehicle. They're light and flat. Some of the smaller hook-shaped folding saws are sweet; they pack well. Nice to have when wood-gathering opportunities (actual windfalls) might arise, or if you need to cut fallen wood just to clear your way.
