Ron , I always temp the point . Just how I do it . I don't worry to much about temp when I go to the oven . I do it compared to time I want to eat , and set the oven accordingly .
Anywhere between 165 and 185 is normal for me .
I either " force " it to finish , and use a 350 degree oven temp...
It's hard to tell what exactly you have , just reading about it . My gut says that it's not a sure thing that the 2 are separate . I'm not saying they aren't , but you're there and I'm not .

My thoughts are yes . You probably fried the element by doing that . There are threads on here about the light , but I would say don't have 2 power in feeds .

Never used the Dill mix , but agree with Charles , and was going to suggest grabbing the salsa mix if you see it . Uses a can of diced or crushed tomatoes I think . Makes it easy , and it's good in my opinion .
