New Englander Shopping for Pellet Smoker/Grill

I have had a Traeger and now have a RecTeq and wouldn't go back. Everything you've mentioned would be fine. In the end I think these days pellet grills are fairly equivalent. It'll just depend on how you use it. If you need a nice app to monitor things....keep an eye on that. RecTeq has great...

    Tri tip like a brisket…

So…I heard the talk and since I do 3-4 tri tips a month I thought I’d try. No joke, it’s some of the best beef I’ve ever done! It took longer than I expected (about 6-7 hours) and it’s hard to justify sometimes with such small cuts…which is why I did two together…but this was amazing. I...

    Considering A Kamado

I run a couple of KJ units and love them. Just a couple things to remember. These are ovens, not smokers. If you really want good smoke flavor the kamado isn't really the way to go. They are extremely efficient with charcoal. So more expensive up front, but you end up getting every bit of...

    Smoked Turkey Advice

The brine is great! I'd recommend nothing else on the bird before smoking except for a dry rub. No oil/fat solutions for sure. Let the bird sit in the fridge for a day after taking it out of the brine to let it dry. Make sure nothing dripping from the top of the smoker too. If crispy skin is a...

    Smoked Turkey Advice

Keep the probe at grate level. Right at the level of your protein. What did you rub on the bird before you smoked it?

Is the Akorn a worthy purchase/upgrade if I already have a Gravity 1050?

Exactly. I get the same. So I typically don't run a full hopper, especially when I'm getting close to the end of a cook. Would you say flavor is the same on your assassin as in your offset? Just easier to run the GF?

Is the Akorn a worthy purchase/upgrade if I already have a Gravity 1050?

I've heard the cleaned smoke idea too. I think its less "cleaned" and more "burned more completely" leaving less compounds that make it into your food. I'm honestly not 100% sure about the physics of it all. I think the best way for smoke flavor from a GF smoker (which flavor can be amazing...

Is the Akorn a worthy purchase/upgrade if I already have a Gravity 1050?

I have a 1050, a KJ classic and KJ jr. I freakin love the kamado. As far as efficiency goes, it really can't be beat. Use minimal charcoal, it retains heat like nothing else. Smoke flavor will not be close to your gravity fed smoker. Or even your pellet grill for that matter. I use the kamados...
