I had one made of that White stuff (HDPE I think).
Had no slot in it.
Just lower blade down, set it place and raise blade up through it.

Looks like you live in a pretty humid climate.
You probably know this, but you should store pellets is a dry place.
Removing pellets from hopper after a cook and storing them in dry place, is a good idea as well.
Pellets can swell with humidity and cause issues.

You may like whatever smoker you get without an add-on smoke box.
Smoke boxes are also good for smoking cheese and anything else you don't...

My Escali has same issue, trying to see the display or use buttons when something large is on it.
Never used batteries in the Escali, always plugged it in.
