...at the beginning of the gas line in case of flameout. There will also be a bypass around the solenoid valve controlled by the pid with a needlevalve to have a small flame constantly so wont need a pilot. Thinking about a second needlevalve before the solenoid valve in case I need to reduce...
Yes the TC would sense the flame and if it blows out would shut off the gas supply. I read that thread yesterday and should be a great help. Inda, I like that bypass idea. Should be able to add a needlevalve to control the low flame on the loop around the valve controlled by the pid.
Yup, so after installing the needlevalve and getting the temp just slightly down, I've smoked 4--5 batches of marlin and it was still hard to get a good smoke in before the fish was overcooked....:emoji_disappointed: So gonna try either the electric option or just throw my mini-hibachi in there...
I agree with the Smoke Vault 24.
It may require some modifications if it's in an exposed location with variable wind conditions. For better temperature control it will require a needle point valve.
I have stabilized mine with the mod's and am very happy with how it's currently performing.

Check the gas orifice in the burner to make sure it isnt clogged. Spiders like to spin webs in there. It could also be a bad regulator or wrong size or maybe have a needle flow valve that isnt open completely. Another possibility may be it has natural gas orifice instead of propane. Good luck.
I haven’t done it but some folks on this forum have installed a needlevalve inline to the burner with success

I use a needlevalve on the hose close to the tank like these in the link.

You can also cut 6d nails (I think that’s the right size) so you have the head and a short piece of the nail and use them as plugs in the burner...
Thanks for the input! I bought the smallest btu burner I could find, as well as installed a needlevalve. I invison essentially having a very small flame because I won’t need hardly any heat to get to the 140ish I need to smoke fish. Will definitely add a heat deflector of some kind though, good...
...are they pretty standard? Can I buy an 'upgraded' one, like maybe a little larger, or a little better control (besides just adding a needlevalve, etc.?). ARE there some propane burners like these that are 'better' or 'worse', which ones to avoid, etc? Like I said, I don't know much about...
...as outside temps don’t get to hot or to cold (I warm/hot smoke most all of my cured meats) the trick is flame control. I see you have a needlevalve so you should be able to make it work, although mine has a red knob to control the regulator pressure as well as the needlevalve.
All of that...

That needlevalve style is not really meant for fine tuning. The style with green dial is what you want. Pretty fine control. From here you can add some nails into the burner holes (@tallbm beat me) to reduce the output. Like the hotplate PID idea and would also recommend just grabbing a...
...unit, and cleaning the oil is a breeze, heats up pretty fast and once you get familiar with it will hold a steady temp, has a inline needlevalve.
Be careful not to turn up the gas too high on lighting it, one of my first times I did and it let out a big boom, being from Detroit I thought it...
Looks like a good basic unit.
Looks similar to zwiller's choice. A basic burner.
The Camp Chef seems to be taking the vote overall.
I've always had soft spot for Coleman stoves. It goes back to my kid days and the Norman Rockwell type vision of camping out.
These are pricey, and they look a...
I have that same red dial hose assembly minus the stainless braid on my smokehouse and still needed the needlevalve, so in combination I have very good heat and flame control.
Do a search on here for needlevalve mod… lots of info on it. lots of folks Have done it for better flame control and thus better heat control. Also using your water pan will help with temp regulation.
