I bought my WSM off of craigslist for about half of a brand new one and it was only about a year old. Then with the extra money you can build yourself a mini-WSM and you'll be ready for big smokes and everyday smokes...

Welcome carol jo! :welcome:
As far as building a smoker, you should check out Brian's build for a miniWSM:

They are small and very portable. It's nothing to bag about, but it's perfect for backyard...
Sounds like an excellent build, I hope to start a RF someday but for now I'm just enjoying my freshly finished MiniWSM. Welcome to the forum, lots of great advice and better people. Good luck, my friend.
Sorry...just realized posted to wrong thread...should have been to miniwsmbuild thread. Can one of you mods repost to correct thread for me?
Thank you in advance.
I'd highly suggest following someone's build that's already been posted. I personally followed BDSkelly's build for my first mini.
As far as the lid fitting if your asking about the SJG lid fitting in the Imusa pit you'll have to crimp down the lip of the pot for it to fit good. If your asking...
I was amazed with JD07's mini WS smoker at the Nov South Florida Gathering. During the Holiday's the tamale pots were really pricey. So the price finally came down and I got one. I have had a garage sale Weber Gold for years as my go to camping grille.
So following the forum advise I cut out...
There are many out there as you know. The WSM is a great path to go. I built my own version of it with my Jumbo Mini, it has a little more control, but I would only go that way if you desire to be a little more hands on in the build. Not sure what your budget is, but a UDS could also be an...
Thanks, RMMurray! I just popped over to YT to check it out. Thanks so much for the tip. The builds are super simple! I may get to build a smoker a lot sooner.
Welcome, glad ya joined us ! What kind of smoker ya interested in ? Charcoal, stick burner, or electric... There's stick burning offsets, WSM charcoal smoker (you could also build a MiniWSM) or there's an MES that's electric ! There's also pellet grills but that may be outta your price range !
You're probably talking about my build post. I used the cut down charcoal grate for the 18" kettle part number #7440. I used the jig saw to cut mine. It work just fine.
For good air circulation reasons I would not make the hole in the bottom of your pot any smaller than described. You need a...
Here is the one I built. The Smokey Joe Gold was cheapest on Amazon ($35) and the IMUSA pot was cheapest at walmart.com site to store ($21). Instead of the clay pot (read the threads, not many people use them anymore) I used a 10" sauté pan ($5) at Walmart.
Here is the link to Brian's build...
I have viewed your build quite a few times while gathering my plans and ideas. I see at one point in your build, there is a grate resting upon the steamer insert lip, do you have that grate there while smoking at all times or was that there for a demonstration reason?
I don't plan to be making anything huge so smaller cuts of meat don't bother me. I just can't fit anything more than a 8 lb butt on the miniWSM or 1 rack of ribs cut in half.
Having two essentially 18" weber grates in a vertical charcoal smoker would be a huge upgrade. I would likely use a 2...
