Was recently bitten by the smoking bug and decided to build a MiniWSM from my Smokey Joe after reading lots of (US) forum posts on it.
Finding a pot to use for the build was tough but eventually picked up a 32l wort boiler from a brewshop.
The fit wasn't quite perfect but good enough so a...
Thanks to all for the suggestions. I'd read about UDS's a while back. A friend of mine's brother runs smokerbuilder.com that sells plans. I may have to pick his brain a bit on an UDS. I'm sure I could build it. Really there's enough out there on the internet that it should be easy.
Hammerhead...
This is very good advice. The WSM are easy to get great results on with minimal effort and they make a size to fit your needs. Get a little experience with one and then branch out from there. I will guarantee that before it's over you'll own more than one type smoker.
Welcome.
Hello all,
I'm a new poster, but have lurked here and elsewhere for some time to study technique, recipes, etc. Very helpful stuff.
I picked up a used SJS on craigslist recently for quick dinners and quickly decided to build a miniwsm as well. Fortunately, I was able to locate a 32qt Imusa...
That was the plan Case. I even bought the smokey Joe. Just ran out of time to get the rest of the parts and put it together. I'll try and build it on the road hopefully. Meanwhile I'm hoping I have enough room in the truck for the MES30. (I guess I could leave one of the kids behind!)
Great looking oven! There are tons of build threads here. Some simple like the mini-WSM or UDS. Some critics motivated like the brick and mortar builds. All depends on what medium you want to build.

Your question to Tropics is a good point. The heat will affect the food and the smoking by cooking too fast if you don't limit it. By reading thru the post you will see where people either use diffusers or water pans to suppress the heat from the...
i use Dirtsailors side light method in my 14.5 wsm but my vents are at the same placement as any other wsm right next to the coal basket but before i used this method i would just light around 5-10 KBB coals and throw them on top of the unlit ones and it didnt take too long for it to come up to...
I personally haven't used a dyna-glo but i have seen many people on here have them (search with the magnifying glass for dyna-glo) i know you need seal up the dyna -glo when assembling it because like any smoker at that price you get major smoke leakage.. If you can gasket it up and use some...
I'm new here, but not to the joys of smoking meats. I've been at it for over 5 years now and have done some catering and even have one competition uner my belt. My bargaining unit at work bought a Lang 48, which I've been smoking on for a while and I usually find myself at the business end of...
I've been having a ton of trouble trying to find a pot for the miniwsmbuild. I have everything else, but missing one of the most important parts. Anyone have any luck lately? No kroger in Iowa unfortunately.
It looks like a miniWSM costs around $100 to build. Not too bad. I wonder if there's an advantage or disadvantage to build a UDS? Seems like a little more cooking area and similar concept for around the same cost. A store in the area sells drums for $15 each. They're old Veg Oil drums and are...
Mike, you mentioned overnight smokes. Assuming an established bed of coals, are you really able to load it up with more charcoal/wood, set the vents and go to bed? How long will it burn steady without reloading or otherwise needing attention? I don't mind getting up once or even twice in the...
Glad to hear that you saw the light on the boots and hats (a straw for summer and a felt for winter - which starts at the end of September they tell; no straws after that date).
Before you jump into a different cooker, consider getting a Weber 22.5" kettle grill. Look for the one with the ash...
I have the 22.5 WSM, mini-WSM, 22.5 kettle and a weber genesis gasser. I use the mini and the kettle the most but it's nice to have R2D2 and the gasser when I need them!
I'd say build yourself a mini and watch craigslist for a WSM for half price or less. There are some great threads on mini...
...here and elsewhere for some time, but finally decided to pull the trigger and sign up today, particularly due to a question about a miniWSMbuild I'm working on. I've generally avoided forums because I have a tendency to get bogged down in research and it's better for me to just "wing it"...
Hey fellas,
Since I've been unable to find the proper pots required for a more common mini-WSMbuild, and having the tools and materials available to me from working in a metal fabrication shop, I've decided to build one out of 1/8" thick aluminum sheet that I will roll to the required...
Good idea. Later today I'm giving it another run. This time I want to see how well I can hold 250 for an hour or so, then crank to 350 for some wings. Should I limit the air intake from the start, or go full until I hit 200 or so?
I think I'll add some side vents at some point as well, but at...
Welcome, in your price range.... Maybe a Masterbuilt Electric Smoker... If your not totally set on electric then ya may consider building a miniWSM ! Ya can build one for round $100 !
