Steady Temp due to welding blanket issue

...light the smoker and if the temps refused to rise like they should, I cover the smoker, and the temps rise right up like magic. I now have a fitted welding blanket on my offset. I don't cover my drum or my kettles - no need. I haven't noticed longer cooking times with a cover. Good luck

    Inconsistent Temperatures MES

Thanks for the encouragement! I bumped up the temp when I woke up this morning and it hit 190 internal temp right at lunch time, so I was able to enjoy it then. I thought it was a little tough, but the flavor was good. It doesn't look even close to as good everything on here! Although, I got...

Pellet Grill Won’t Get Up To Temp…. little help please

...Dennis Ogg has always been my goto person. 40º definitely is not the issue but wondering about the wind. Depending on how strong & the angle hitting the MAK it can have a negative effect. If you go the welding blanket route be aware of the venting on the back side and keep them unblocked.

Will this PID work on "any" electric smoker?

Already wrapped up in Reflectix (I think that's the name...basically bubble wrap encased in foil). Quick question about the wiring when installing the hotplate...what kind of sheathing do I need to protect the wiring, what size, and can I get it at Lowes or Home Depot?

Pellet Grill Won’t Get Up To Temp…. little help please

No wind and yes, Dennis is great to work with, both now and in years past.

    Inconsistent Temperatures MES

...at the temp you punched in, done!! One final thing. As mentioned by the others, your MES Analog has zero insulation. Getting a welding blanket or mylar insulation sleeve, or rigging up some kind of insulation all around and on top will greatly help your smoker efficiency so it doesn't lose...

    Baby it's cold outside!!!

Thanks Ray. They'll fire up just fine. My gasser was a little dirty and hadn't been used since Sept. so I think that was the problem. That looks real good Sam. Once I got it fired up it held temps fairly well. It's not really a good enough gasser to get a good char or grate marks. Thanks...

Which pellet grill I should buy? Traeger, Camp Chef or Req Teq?

The place i bought the grill from threw in the winter cover for no extra cost but a welding blanket would do the trick also. Im not sure what campchef uses as an insulation in their blankets but mine weighs a ton. Corey

I looked at the cold weather blanket, $200! Just my two cents, I used a Harbor Freight welding blanket on my WSM for temps below freezing, it worked well. $20.

    Ceramic briquettes

...a few cooks under my belt. My question is about adding ceramic briquettes to the smoker to act as thermo mass. Was wondering what everyone's ideas are on that. I live in the cold north Calgary Alberta so it will be getting cold here soon. I will be adding a welding blanket to the set up as well.

Which pellet grill I should buy? Traeger, Camp Chef or Req Teq?

I use a Harbor Freight welding blanket on my Camp Chef in winter. Does the same thing the custom cover does at a way cheaper price. Also, don't forget to close the stack gap down to 1/2 inch in the cold weather.

Broil King Pellet Grill Woes, Traeger or Yoder as a replacement?

My Camp Chef works fine in cold. I use a cheap welding blanket in the cold weather because it burns less fuel. I think you'll find that no matter which brand you go with, it'll burn less fuel with some insulation on top of the cook chamber.

    Camp chef xxl

I went the HF welding blanket route for my Camp Chef pellet grill. I may have went with their custom one, but it was never in stock when I needed it. I did find some knock off blankets on Amazon, or Ebay that are made to fit my grill, and they are a lot cheaper than the one CC sells. I may...

Which pellet grill I should buy? Traeger, Camp Chef or Req Teq?

Doug, what gap do you run your stack during the warmer months?

Which pellet grill I should buy? Traeger, Camp Chef or Req Teq?

Far as I recall, it's a fiberglass cover. same stuff welding blankets are made from. The welding blankets are pretty heavy too. Yeah, it's a little dirty, so I may spring for a new one this fall. It's seen a lot of cooks. To open the grill, I just grab the edges near the top of the lid and...

    Cold weather pellet grill/smoker, SS

My Camp Chef SG24wifi does everything you're looking for aside from the stainless steel part. I use it all winter without issue, but I do use a welding blanket on top of it in cold weather.

    Cold weather pellet grill/smoker, SS

RE: Insulation - its not really required - works fine without. Rec Teq stopped selling the blanket/cold weather cover because they didn’t feel they were necessary. as @bigfurmn stated, some use welding blankets as needed.

    Silverbac or RT590

I went through the same scenario between those 2 a couple yrs ago, went the 590 route. It holds it's own in ND winters. I did cut a welding blanket to fit this last winter.

    Camp chef xxl

With the XXL you have to be careful if you go the welding blanket route. There isn't a regular chimney or smokestack on them like on a normal pellet unit, there just an exhaust grate on the side that you need to be careful not to cover. I don't think the XXL will get hot enough to ruin any magnets.
