In the market for a new smoker. Any recommendations?

...whatcha get. I run my Rec Teq year round. Its been stored outside its whole life, never an issue. I keep it covered is all. Im in the Colorado mountains and we are cold and snowy as well. Runs fine in cold, just will use more pellets (they all will). A welding blanket helps, but not...

Breaking out the welding blanket for SB Sunday

...but it's also forecast to be the coldest weather of the season thus far and very windy. So the 'ol MES will be getting wrapped in the welding blanket and the Auber has it's own insulated sleeve I made out of an oven mitt.Because of the weather I'm going to keep it fairly simple and go with no...

RecTec 590 wont go above 180

Do you use a welding blanket to insulate it?

Do you leave your pellet grill plugged in?

...vent the smoke. If the thing ever did catch fire, it wouldn't be a blaze. The doors on the cook chamber and hopper would keep it contained long enough to shove it out the door. I never leave it unattended. Winter mode with welding blanket on. I have a heated shop from where I monitor the cook.

Or this. But I would shake them down first and see what they think.

    Cold Weather Smoking

Wind is about twice the factor as the ambient temp from my experience with the 40. Have a 3-sided coat and top made of reflectix and wrapped with welding blanket. Have smoked below 0° many times.

Pork Rib Poast ( another indoor storm cook )

Indoors outdoors who cares! That is awesome! That storm completely missed us this time but we have a clipper coming through Friday night and once again it'll be windy with single digit temps.I'll be wrapping the 'ol MES in the welding blanket for Superbowl.

    MES in freezing temps

Toss a welding blanket over it. Can get one cheap at harbor freight or a like store. Just make sure not to cover the vents. If you can get some plywood or something to block the wind is helpful as well.

RecTec 590 wont go above 180

No. We dont get to much of that really cold weather often. After thinking about it I guess one hour not that bad to heat up. At the time is was a bit worried about it running flat out for that long. In my mind I was thinking hopper fire but I guess these are made to do it.

    MES in freezing temps

Update: Had zero issues. Didn't even get the welding blanket. MES came right up to temp and held the entire cook. Obviously lost temp when I had to open and swap racks, but came right back after closing the door. Probably cost me some time overall, but no big deal. Auber PID is awesome.

    Cold Weather Pellet Smoking

I generally use my Pit Boss in the garage but I've used it when it was well below 0F. Find s good welding blanket or insulated cover and pellet consumption is less but cold hasn't slowed me down. Last Christmas I did prime rib in the garage. Cold... yes. Delicious... oh yeah. Totally worth it...

    Inkbird 106 Controller Issue

...Probably the weather. In these kind of conditions, some people surround the smoker cabinet with some sort of insulation, like a welding blanket. Others that experience these conditions regularly build a permanent structure around their smoker. It might be best today to finish your cook...

    MES in freezing temps

...Vault. I also have issues with temperature swings in colder weather. I was going down the road of building an insulated box around three sides and the top, but that's one more large thing to store someplace. I never considered a welding blanket. Great idea. I can punch a hole for the top vent.

    Cold Weather Pellet Smoking

Top items are wireless temp probes (if you aren't using them already) and perhaps an insulated blanket. The probes let you keep the lid closed as much as possible, which is, obviously, even more important in winter than in summer. For blankets, most big names make their own, plus there are...

    Cold Weather Pellet Smoking

I second this same blanket from Harbor Freight. I got a Oklahoma Joe Rider DLX that has 2 vents out the top and didn't do anything fancy just throw it over the top and let it do its thing. I think when I got mine was with my little stick burner and obviously at that time I set it up different...

Thanks Norm for the like and the comment Thats what I thought, but Have not smoked anything for a while as very bust with work and the storms just keep coming through. And it was a great meal. Cold Weather Pellet Smoking

I have a cold weather cover. Rec Teq stopped selling them saying it was not needed. While true, pellet consumption will go way up with no insulation. Welding blankets are fireproof and often used/moded etc. Found this one, not sure if it the exact right one but PB makes them.

    Cold Weather Pellet Smoking

I'm with ya brother. I store mine in the garage with a dust jacket and use it half out/half in of the garage right at the overhead door opening. Keeps the south/SW winds at bay and the smoke is drafted out the door opening. Did smoked salmon last week to perfection.
