mes not producing smoke at 130f

@meatloaf This was my experience aswell. Using the same heating element for temperature control and smoke generation is a flaw in these tools. A mailbox mod or a Masterbuilt slow smoke attachment helps solve this problem.

BGE or Traeger for new house

Can't help you with that decision. Don't get rid of that MES40,add a PID and a mailbox mod and you get one hell of a smoker.

Masterbuilt Electric Smoker Needs Better Chip Burner.

Welcome to SMF from Indiana. I think you will find a consensus here from most of the MES users that either going with a pellet tray OR taking it further with a mailbox mod and the tray are the ways to go. The chip method has a number of drawbacks.

    MES Peculiarities

There are a couple of mods that can be done to the MES that can make it a much better cooker than it is out of the box.PID controller and mailbox mod are something to consider in the future.

    Things You Wish You Knew

Saturday on TBS... NOT the Braves... =|;^P

...masses. Thought I would warm up the smoker with a couple of baby back racks... with Jeff's naked rub (can't be beat), MES 40, and the mailbox mod, with the amazin tray... going 3-2-1, and pretty fool proof. :emoji_ok_hand: Starting out just fine, and will keep you updated - Happy Saturday...

    Modified MES 30 test run

Have you tried Auto Tune ? It can give you a good starting point, but from there on if it still overshoots you'll need to do some adjustments. Just to let you know, the PID settings on different brands of PID controllers are not the same. Especially the P setting so read the manual or find a...

Masterbuilt Electric Smoker Needs Better Chip Burner.

I could never get chips to smoke decently when set under 200°. Completely removed chip tray and did the Auber and mailbox mod. Can smoke anything at any temps now. Can use chips, dust, or pellets. Did numerous batches of cheese this winter with temps well below zero. Just set the Auber for about...

Time is running out - cheese

Hickory is fine. Both my kiddos like their cheese smoked with hickory, and the mailbox mod should keep your smoke cleaner. See above post #11 for more suggestions, and good luck. Remember warmer outside temps will aid in a smokier profile on the cheese. Chris

Probe placement and calibration? (MES30 + Auber)

Foil disposable cake pan on the rails the water pan was on from the Dollar Tree. The heat will find it's way on all four sides. I usually use pellets or sawdust in the mailbox mod but this was a rare apple chunk in the chip tray.

...to be refilled every 20-30 mins or so. Both issues are most often resolved by using an A-maze-n pellet tray (now owned and sold by Pitboss). While not entirely necessary, a mailbox mod makes it much easier to use the tray. You can do a search here for mailbox and find a bunch of how-to threads.

MES Rewire Simple Guide - No Back Removal Needed!!!

...P=7, I=600 and D=150 and the app smoker pic is this style smoker like a couple others. I believe Auber makes the PIDs for these style smokers so this is their default setting when you buy one of their PID. I hope someone has the time to do this and post for the Mes 30 and 40 with mailbox mod.

    Options for building new smoker

I've mainly been running a Bradley with the mailbox mod and a pellet tray with decent results. I've found that I'm usually bumping against the upper limits on capacity and have thought about building a smoker for some time now, but I have been struggling with how to heat it. Well tonight, the...
