Allows you to burn the fire much longer than simply lumping the coals on the grate. I fill the basket 2/3-3/4 full then dump a chimney of hot coals on top and the fire slowly burns down. The basket allows the fire to draw air from all sides as it burns down. If you just tried to pile the coals all the way to the top, without the basket the fire would smother itself as it burned down and the coals would tumble off on all directions. With the basket I can burn at 225-250 for 6-7 hours plus. Also as you prep and fill the basket with charcoal layer in some wet wood chunks or chips and as the coals burn down they will add smoke to the chamber. No messing around adding more wood every 30 mins or hour for smoke. Google "Minion method", which the basket is really designed to allow. Good luck!
