I have the original coal grate beneath, however the basket is big enough, it doesn't even touch the grate. I have since added an aluminum bread pan filled with water in the cooking area blocking the opening between the fire box and cooking area, and that has REALLY help level out the temps. But I still seem to go through a lot of charcoal during a 3+ hour cook. I will be trying real wood in one of my next burns to see how that works compared to charcoal.
