ok so is the idea is to cover the part of the hole in between the firebox and grill..or do i need all of it opened to allow heat and smoke to flow thru

ok so i see the top of yours does not cover the top of the smoke entrance from the firebox...Thats my question do i need to cover the top of the opening so i can send everything up underneath to keep the heat from going out over the 
the top
