I like the new model

I never noticed the drip tray above the water pan before.....

This is a great improvement over the previous model

The water pan is substantially smaller, and looks like Masterbuilt finally figured it out, that the water pan in the old model produces waaaay too much water vapor

The chip pan is no longer enclosed, and should draft better

The old model does not draft out the front or door side, only the back.  This helped cause a hot spot up the right rear corner

Exhaust is now on the opposite side from the heating element and intake.  This should help the draft inside the smoker and possibly minimize hot spots along the back....Maybe?

The light makes more sense in the new location, above the door.

It's inside on the old model, and is useless when  it gets all gunked up

Not sure if I like the Controller inside the top of the smoker.  Will the controller be able to withstand the heat????

Looks the controller is removable and possibly attached to the front of the smoker, just above the door.

I great improvement would be to have adjustable brackets for the shelves

This way, we could buy additional racks for making jerky or smoking fish

I'm curious how the new model performs vs. the old model???

First off , hello... It's mah first post. I've been lurking here for a few weeks and finally have something to contribute. Got a lot to learn about smoking though lol

I bought the previous model MES40 from SAMs about 3 weeks ago. Right off the bat I felt the quality was a bit less than my buddies MES40 from Bass Pro. Door didn't seal good, lots of smoke out the chip loader, and the feet didn't want to stay where I set them. It could have been n my head, who knows. It was 7 days old and after smoking some shrimp I was rolling it back into the garage and one side of the handle pulled off taking the backing with it. That was the final straw, it went back to SAMs.

After that I bought the new MES40 pictured above. I've had it about a week and love it. So... My inexperienced $.02 about it....

- I like the integrated control panel better, it gives you the entire flat surface to set a large meat tray on

- love the look of the LEDs. With the door open they do a great job lighting up the inside of the smoker and a pretty decent area around the front of it. With the door closed it mostly lights up the surrounding area, not much light on the inside. The previous model did a better job there, after all what's the purpose of the window if you can't really see in it.

- speaking of windows, it seems like the one on the newer model is bigger. That's just a guess, I didn't measure them

- the new one certainly smokes more / faster than the previous model. The wood chips are reduced to ash rather than just smaller, burnt chips

- the chip loader isn't very smooth to operate. I find myself getting slightly frustrated trying to get t to slide in / out or spin easily.

- Over the long haul I worry about the pretty looking plastic skirt around the bottom, it scrapes pretty bad when moving it around.

I also bought the cold smoker add-on to try it. That was a waste. It smokes really well, but it all goes up and out the unit. What doesn't go out the top leaks out the transfer tube and you get very little smoke in the smoker itself. More that it's not-so-cold cold smoking capability, I like the massive chip tray you an load up and smoke for hours. I'm going to pick up some gasket maker from Auto Zone and see if I can't seal up the leaks a bit. We'll see how that goes....
