It took me three tries but I did get a flame, albeit a low flame. The temp gauge on the smoker wouldn't go above 150. I did some digging around the net and saw that it could be a sticking regulator and I followed the procedure to take care of that. It appeared to work as when I relit I got a bigger flame, however this time the temp gauge won't go above 240. This after it's been running for 45 minutes with the door closed and the top vent closed as far as it could close, which isn't much.

Anyone else experience this or know of someone who did and how it was resolved? I have the BBQ Grillware SG1000 propane smoker.

Thanks...

Is the thermometer accurate? Check it with boiling water, should read 212º. Even if you are using a thermometer mounted in the door, remove it and check it's accuracy. Many factory mounted thermo's are notorious for being inaccurate.

@ MossyMO...Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give that a try in the morning.

@ boykjo..I've read through that thread and every other one that mentions BBQ Grillware numerous times. That particular one has some talk about the temp gauge being 15 degrees off..if mine is off, it's by much more than 15 degrees. I do appreciate the suggestion, however.

Thank you both.

I just cut it off after it had been going for well over an hour. The temp was reading 235, and I don't think the temp gauge is the problem. The reason being that I stuck my hand inside the smoker and was able to tough the metal and whatnot with no problem whatsoever. It was very warm, but not hot to the touch.

That said, I still plan on doing the water test tomorrow.

kingt36 can you get some pictures of what you are seeing?

Either the regulator is bad or the propane tank isn't open all the way or is running low.

Is this your first cook with this smoker?  If so I'd seriously consider taking it back and getting a replacement.  I never had this problem on my BBQ Grillware.

Post some pics of it in action if you can.

It's not my first cook, but it is my first cook on it in about 4 years. I'm pretty sure there is no taking it back at this point. Here are some pictures that I just snapped with my phone..

The propane tank is fully open.

This is as closed as the top vent (only vent) gets.

The temp is holding pretty steady at just above 200 right now with the burner control set to high.

Believe it or not, there is a flame there.

Great news!!!

I went ahead and pulled of the entire burner assembly and cleaned it out a little bit. There were some spider webs, and even a dead spider in there. I hooked it back up and within 5 minutes it was approaching 400 degrees!!  Here is the latest picture.

Glad you got it fixed! As I was reading this I was just going to suggest that then I saw you did it. Spiders just love the tubes on burners!

As I was reading along, believe it or not, I was wondering about spiderwebs.  I have had that happen to me with my GOSM.  I bet you store your smoker outdoors.  When I had it happen, the flame never looked right until I cleaned everything out.

It's been in a garage for two years and out on the patio the last year and half. There are so many trees and a small lake by my house though, it would have gotten more bugs in the garage than it does outside..

I'm going to have to see if I can find something to discourage spiders from crawling in there..

I wonder if a small piece of Screen pushed in or covering the holes would work?...JJ

simple...just smoke with it daily!

You could put up a sign "No Spiders Allowed!"

Spiders can pretty much go anywhere they want!

Lol....thank you all for the encouragement..I'm doing my first pork butt today. It's a small one, about 3.5 lbs. I'm nervous, but hopeful. I used Jeff's rub and tried to follow directions to a T. I keep having to play with the burner control to get a good temp. The gauge is hovering around 250 now. I'm anxious to see a good bark when I do open it up. About how long does it take to see the bark?
