Upright turkey....horizontal smoker

    I'd really like to try beer can cookin' on a turkey. The problem is, I have a horizontal smoker. I haven't measured anything yet, but I'm wondering if I remove the grill grates and use the lower ash grate, if I would have enough room.

    Just thinking out loud here, but I'm guessing I could fashion a foil baffle to force the heat from the firebox up, so it doesn't hit the bird directly. Then extend the smoke stack down to the grate level (a mod I've been meaning to add anyhow) to keep the heat and smoke from going straight out.

    Any comments/suggestions?

    EDIT: Forgot to mention, if you don't alread know, I'm using a chargriller pro.

    Well, it sounds crazy, but I could get away with spending $500 on components for my temperature controller, but would probably get in trouble for bringing home a $50 smoker......"why do you need another smoker....!" (and if anyone near and dear to this household is listening....of course I didn't spend that much on my temp controller....wink)

    Your turkey might have a cold bottom. For GPs why don't you throw the themometer down low on your next smoke and see what temps you get?

    Hey Josh, remove the grate on the right side, set your bird on the lower rack like you said, and temporarily lower the stack to the lower grate, do a test smoke and adjust, depending on how it draw's.

    I think that poor bird would feel like he just got out of prison!

    Actually, I'm going to try this micro-keg from Heineken:

    I think I saw someone use this on the "Cooking for Engineers" website some time ago.

    Thanks Shawn. I have seen that before, but had forgotten all about it. I may have to try that if my tests don't pan out.

    We used it last year, on a trial turkey in the oven and it came out pretty good. I'll probably use it when I try smoking a turkey this weekend. I used Pepsi in it last year. This time, I'll try some Dr Pepper or root beer.
