I am going to buy a new unlined drum so I don't need to fiddle with the burnout etc.

The question is this. I can get the drums closed head or open head. The open heads come with the ring & bolt type lid? I assume I want the open head?

You should be able to get it either way, especially if you are BUYing one.

I would still burnout to get the paint off the outside, and cause it's fun.

I would get the open head. If I'm understanding what you are saying...
Open head as in the lid is held on by the ring.
Closed head as in you would have to cut the top off or pry it off?

What Bubba said. :)

Also take lots of pictures for us!

Thats what I thought too Bubba. Ne need to burn the outside paint off with a new drum.

What she said. ^^^ Get the open head drum.

No need to burn. Paint on the outside is fine -- although big fire IS fun.

. Most new unlined drums will have a "rust inhibitor" (light film) inside. Wash with something like Simple Green, rinse, dry, spray down with Pam and start drilling holes.

On Edit: Oops, Bubba beat me to it.

I have noticed that I dont see on the lid pics on here the bolt & ring set up. Do I take that off or use that to ensure a tight seal?

I have a ring for mine but have never needed it. It seems to seal tight enough without. Not sure if it's the same set up as what you have though.

Gotta agree with Cowgirl here. The ring is unnecessary because you have removed the gasket that was in the groove in the top. Without that gasket the ring has nothing to compress and hence does not tighten the seal.
