I know most every thing here is bout food but,I need some help.
Bout nov.I had to replace the pump in my well,150ft deep.ol pump had schedule 40 on it and i put in the new pump with new rolled poly pipe at a length of 150ft....all the sudden I am gettin alot of dirt in my water....well has run clean until recently(bout a week now)....What is weird is the fact that I can open the spigot at the wellhouse and the water is crystal clear.....open any faucet in the house and runs red dirt.....open all faucets in the house and let em run for about 10 mins.every thing clears up.....Get up in the mornin, red water again till I flush the system...All faucets open and runnin for about 10 mins.
Any ideas?

Just a wild haired guess, but sounds like ya got a leak someplace an the dirt is seepin in. Anybody else care ta take a stab at thisin?

I ain't familiar with yer poly stuff, sch 40 is perty tough stuff, new stuff rated fer how much pressure?

Have you had a long dry spell? I get sand out of my well for my sprinkler sys when we do..the water table drops and the sand or in your case (maybe clay if it's red) caves in around the drop pipe) I then have to run mine for about 4 hrs onto the ground to get another hole around the drop pipe...just my exp

How old is your house? Got the old Galvanized piping inside? The increased pressure of the new pump may be breaking up the rust inside the pipes?

So, it ran clear for a while after the pump change, now it's not?

You guys under a major drought or flood?

I'm not a well pump expert, but do occasionally deal with them. It sounds to me like something is causing what I'll call "water jarring" in your lines. Perhaps the pressure tank is cycling the pump on/off more frequently than it should. That could indicate a leak in the line between the pump and house. The frequent cycling would have a tendency to dislodge some sediment build-up either in the water line or inside your pressure tank. It does seem odd that this is a recent problem, considering the pump was replaced back in Nov.

If you have the old galvanized iron water lines from the well to the house, it is quite possible that they sprung a leak somewhere and are causing the pump to be cycled frequently. The iron lines can be fixed, but that is usually only a temporary fix, as it won't be long before they spring another leak.

That's just my best guess with the info you posted. Hope it helps.

Seems like you have the basics covered in the responses above.
A leak letting in mud if you live in an area with lots of clay or iron ore .
Or some old galv pipeing getting plugged up with the red corosion from time breaking up and comming through after it has a few hours to settle.
Put some fresh red water in a jug and let it settle , see what it looks like. Should be a water athority place in your area that will test for free and let you know what you have and how to get it straightened out.

If he has positive pressure in the line, water will shoot out, but mud should not be able to get in the lines. But then again, as my wife has so eloquently said, I'm usually wrong!

Far from an expert I am

, but I was thinking that betwixt the pump and house. when the pump was not running , a break in the line would let the pressure out and allow some seepage back in.

My wife says the same thing about me , and she's often right

Sorry to hear that. I just change our pump well i hired it done. Bent me over real good od course. If you hired it done have come back until prob. fixed. Hope you get it sorted out. Was the pipe straight when it went down the hole.

Man thanx for all the input.....I have found that my pump seems to be cycling more than it should......almost like it is short cycling....I am also slowly losing pressure at the house.. as well as some surging......now I am thinkin with the pump runnin so much may be it is bangin around in the hole knockin some stuff loose......also had to put some air in my tank......Bad bladder maybe?.....

Yeah, it's possible that your pressure tank is going bad....they don't last forever.....but, I still would tend to think that if you're losing pressure at the tank, there is a leak somewhere. And it may NOT be in your line.....possibly a toilet that doesn't shut off completely....or something, somewhere leaking inside your house.

Depending on how old your pressure tank and pressure switch is, that may be what you should check into replacing first....that's much cheaper than digging up and replacing a water line.

Also, make sure the air pressure in your tank is about 2 lbs. below the "low" cut-off of your pressure switch......i.e. if it is a 30-50 pressure switch, your tank should have 28 lbs of pressure when empty.
