use of propane..

Was wondering what the amount of hours you can get from a full tank or propane?

I kept a log of that with my GOSM once, this was last summer so the ambient temps were high and the average smoker temp was about 230*, anyway I quit writing in the log after 42 hours and it probably went 4 or 5 hours more. Oh yea, it was a 4.7 gallon tank.

Depends on the size of the tank.
The size of the the smoker.
Insulation value.
Wind speed.
Ambient temperature.
Damper position.
Smoker temperature.
Smoker load.

Not an easy question to answer.

There are a lot of things that can change how much you go through.
- outside temp
- what kind of smoker
- any mods done to the smoker
- what temp your cooking at
- are you peeking a lot
- rain
- wind
- sun
That being said I average over 50 hrs on a 20 lb. tank.

My smoker is homemade, but I'm not getting nearly 50 hours....maybe 20 at the most.....Would someone elaborate about

the conditions of there smoker that they are using ? I may need to look into insulating mine.....ShoneyBoy

Hey SB, I just have a GOSM Widebody that is uninsulated but when I was tracking my usage it was summer, probably 80* - 90* outside and I got about 45 to 50 hours out of a 4.7 gallon tank. The only mod I have done that might have helped with the usage was I put a smaller burner in it to get lower temps but while I was tracking I was averaging 230* - 240*.

Shoney, mine is a moded master forge from lowes. I wasn't getting nearly the hours I am now before the mods. I also learned to keep the door shut.

I had the burner in the cabinet at first, but it would just go out on me sometimes .....Some others on the site thought it was starved for oxygen, so I moved it to where the top of the burner is even with the bottom of the smoker......I haven't had any problems with that in a while, but now I'm seeing by everyones post I still maybe having problem.....I'm thinking that I will have to start documenting my time and temperature just to check and see where I'm at on fuel consumption......Thanks everyone for the information ShoneyBoy
