New to the forum, tired of being jealous of my brother's Traeger. I've started looking around and trying to make a decision. I can get a new Ironwood 650 for $1199. There is a retailer selling a Timberline 850 for the same price, it doesn't have the updated D2 drive system. I've heard there have been issues with the Timberline, but I live in UT and use it year round. I've been told the added insulation in the Timberline is better for that. Traeger's marketing makes it sound like the new D2 system is a definite upgrade. Any thoughts out there?

Welcome to the forum RickyD. Use the search feature; a couple of others have had similar questions and gotten some user advice. Good luck!

At that price point you have several options. I have a pro22 traeger and love it, 2-3 cooks a weeks, zero issues.
BUT, if I were looking in the $1k and over bracket, a Rec Tec would be hard to argue against.
A $400 Pit Boss makes just as good as food.

The new D2 system is nice bit I would go for the 850 for the same price as the 650. The 850 is a great grill and hasn't really had any problems. I have the 1300 and love it, the only thing I would do with an 850 is make a cover for the grease drip trough from an drip pan. There have been a couple of fires reported, from sparks getting into the trough because it's closer to the fire pot on the 850 then my 1300. I think the new ones come with a cover so you should check that out.

Also new to the forum and a Utahn (Weber County). After looking at Traegers & Camp Chefs ( and before I joined this and a couple other Q/Smoker forums and finding out about all the other grill/smokers available :emoji_astonished:), I decide the features on the Camp Chef had an advantage over the Traeger. I bought the Woodwind SG w/ Sear Box direct from CC at $899. I've made over a dozen cooks on it so far and couldn't be happier with its performance thus far. I'm using Lumber Jack Comp MHC Blend pellets and found a local source for them at $10 for a 20 lb bag. Most of the pellet companies use filler wood up to 70 % which doesn't really generate smoke. Lumber Jack and a couple other brands don't use any fillers at all and are 100% of the smoke flavor wood you're looking for. Good luck with your search for your grill and welcome to the forum from another newbie. :emoji_sunglasses:

Thanks for all the input everyone, I'm enjoying the research part of buying this grille. Still haven't made up my mind yet, so many options.
