Taylor is a good brand. I have a taylor wired, and it's served me well. Remember on the mechanical... smoke WILL get in there and gum 'em up. A good soak in rubbing alchohol will remove the build-up. Or use vodka, and then make a Smoky mary! heh!
Many people use the double probe version of the maverick digital thermometer that you have pictured.
It's the Maverick ET-73, and has dual probes for monitoring the smoker temperature as well as the temperature of the meat. It has alarms you can set for high and low temperatures for both probes and a remote receiver so you can monitor the temps from inside your house as long as you are not out of range. The remote range is listed as 100 ft. but in practice, especially going thru walls of a house the range is much less.
thats the same one i got it told me that my turkey was done in two hours i checked it with my old one and it was only at 140. i did a check with both the old and new and they were within 2 degrees so i dont have any clue what went wrong when i had it in the turkey.
I have the mav et-73 and like it lots. I also have a $16 one from kitchen collection for use with more than one item cooking at a time. I do not think you can have too many in my opinon!!!!!
