Softwood charcoal ????

I have been making my own charcoal lately using maple off my parents farm. I was wondering can I use soft wood. I know softwoods are no good for smoking but would the charcoal be good??
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Nice lookin coal D. I'm clueless about charcoal but I think I read on here somewhere that kingsford brickettes are softwood and alder.
