Without knowing the budget it would be hard to say. I can grill and smoke on my old Brinkman horizontal, think they call it a Cimmaron now or something like that. New it could be out of her price range, but used it might be found at a yard sale. The downside would be the cost and the limited cooking area when used to grill.
I have a BSKD that works great for grilling and smoking, and new cost much less than the horizontal does. Grilling is no problem, and I like the vertical smoke chamber but when smoking you'll need lots of fuel unless you mod it somehow. I still haven't added propane to mine yet, but a couple simple, fast, and cheap alternatives I came up with made a huge difference and didn't cost me a dime.

Using the fireplace grate and moving the ash pan over the grilling area forced more heat into the smoke chamber and also allowed me to load it up with more fuel at the start and less was needed to complete the smoke.
Also have to say sorry I didn't put the images in as thumbnails, but I didn't know this site allowed it.
