Smoke box on element?

Hi guys just a quick question

I have a brinkman model 810 I was looking to purchase a smoke box for easier cleanup. Can I put the box right on the element? Right now it says to puts the chips around the "lava Rocks" but cleaning will be a pain should I make a bracket so it not sitting directley on the element ?

I'm on a Brinkman as well and that is how I do it.  I have not seen anyone say otherwise here.  I get good results.

I use two stainless boxes, set right on the grills no problem
