My brother in law just bought this grill.

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/hybrid...as-and-charcoal-cooking-system/prod2410014.ip

He lives 2 hours away so we have been discussing possible modifications over the phone and through email.

Quick description:

propane side (cook chamber)  is 17" wide, 21" long and measures 15" from top of lid to bottom

Charcoal side (fire box) is 17" wide, 21" long and measures 20" from top of lid to bottom

there is a full depth divider between the  two sides.  The top half of the divider is in the lids and the bottom half of the divider is fixed from the cooking surface down to the bottom of both chambers.

My modifications idea are to put the lid with the chimney over the propane side and not the charcoal side as shown in the picture.

Than according to the calculator, cut a 57 sqin hole between the firebox and the cooking chamber.  My thought is to cut this as a 4" x 15" hole about 2" down from the top of the support.  I'm thinking the chamber-to-chamber opening would be better to be wider than deep.  Than add the high temp silicone around both lids.

According to the calcuator the 3" diameter chimeny needs to be 50 in long.  It is roughly 7".

What are your thoughts on the modifications and what do you think we should do for the chimney?

Thank you.

Are you planning on incorporating the IR side of the grill into the charcoal side ??  Opening up the divider to allow smoke to pass through both sides ???   I would not do that.... I would buy a SFB smoker and mod it to work properly.....  You are messing with an expensive IR cooker... You could make both side not work well.....

Dave,

We weren’t planning on using the IR.  The plan was to open up the center divider between the charcoal side and the propane side of the grill.  The charcoal side could than be used as the firebox and the propane side as the cook chamber.

It appears this thread has been duplicated; more than likely due to my impatience and ignorance as to how the site works when I tried to place it on here the first time.  However one of the posts in the other thread mentioned using a Smokey Joe as an external source of smoke and venting it into the air intake of the charcoal box.  This idea sound less intrusive and as you said we are messing with an expensive cooker and we could ruin both sides from working if we do too much modification.  I’m leaning towards this or maybe a cold smoker of sorts instead of all the mods originally discussed.

Thank you for your insight.
