I was searching and not having much luck. On chicken I bought couple Tuesday and the sell by date was September 7. They were in the fridge area and put them in the fridge when I got home. Should I put them in the freezer or will they be good until the sell by date? I'm using one tomorrow and another Monday. My wife said they smelled weird but she's never smelled them because I've only done one last weekend and she wasn't here. I can't smell anything because I lost it a few years ago. It wasn't slimy and had fresh blood in the bag. Any input would be great and thanks in advance.

The chicken will be good until the sell by date with no problem.

Poultry will get a slight smell from sitting in its own juices and being wrapped air tight. I will rise mine and let it sit for about 10-20 min. If it still has the off oder, then I make the best decision I can to keep my guest safe. Yes I have thrown away some chicken.

The sell by date is a perfect case scenario. It all depends on how it was handled before and after you purchased it. Based on the sell by date you should be fine, but if it helps you and the boss sleep better. You can freeze it. But remember every time you freeze anything you deteriorate the quality and most chicken has already been frozen before you got it.

I know did not help much, but your sell by date is giving you a couple days cushion.
