Pipe for smoker pit

 I am thinking about builting a pit and would like to know if anyone knew where to find a 10 ft long, 3/8 inch thick, and 30 inches in diameter  pipe for the chamber?   I live in and around the charlotte, nc area and all we have are thin walled fuel oil tanks.  My pit I have now am not to happy with and would love to build a texas style pit.  The problem is, that most companies that have it don't do small orders and are very exspenisve to buy.   I have a friend who has a pit like I want to build he got when he lived in texas.  Any advise would be very helpful.  Thanks

You might keep a check on the scrap yards in your area. Let them know what you are looking for and leave a phone number. I know in our area lots of scrap is being sold to yards. CF

If your welding skills are good (at least better than mine ... haha) You could make it out of 3/8 " plate. It wouldn't be a smooth circle, but you constructing a decagon out of the plate.  It might sound hard, but the inside angle is 36 degrees and the two outside angles are 72 degrees. There are 10 of them in a full circle.

Hello sniltz.

3/8" plate, though it works well, would  make it much heavier than necessary. 1/4" wall is pretty standard. That's why a lot of us build them out of propane tanks, and price If you can find an old one. Try craigslist. Also I think the domed ends look cool.
