Recently while at the Bass Pro Shop, I was looking at the smokers, when a man in a wheel chair asked me if he could help me decide which smoker to select. I was interested in the Masterbuilt 30" electric. He told me that if I could wait till black friday (day after Thanksgiving) that the Masterbuilt smokers would be about $100.00 bucks cheaper. Well hell, for a hundred bucks I told him I would wait. I researched this smoker a bit and discovered that Masterbuilt does not have a replacement for the heater element, which bothers me a bit when I found that out. I also read in the forums that you do not get a big smoke ring with the electric units. I'm going to have research this a little more before I decide. I live in Orlando and my primary smoking would be Ribs and chuck roasts, also pork chops and turkey breasts. Any thoughts anyone might have on this would be appreciated. Thanks: Pauldavid

Welcome to SMF glad you joined us. You'll find lots of good info and some great recipes here. Many of our members have the MES tho most try to go for the 40" you. You may not get the smoke ring but you will get the smoke flavor.

You might want to check out Jeff's Free 5 day E-course it will teach you all the basics and a whole lot more!

Like piney said, you can't taste the ring! If you want something that you don't have to babysit all day you can check out the propane smokers, not quite as set and forget like an electric but close and if you want to go charcoal the Weber Smokey Mountains (WSM) are very good performers.

I have a Smokin Tex 1400 elec. Had it almost 2 yrs. I'm very satisfied. Using what I've learned on SMF and the advice of it's members I smoke ribs, brisket, Butts, chicken, fish, nuts, cheese and cured Canadian Bacon, Buckboard bacon, and have 27lbs of bacon going now. You get a real good smoke flavor with little wood. Set your smoker temp. and then watch your meat temp. It's really that simple. your right not much if any smoke ring. but darn tasty. Good luck

Well, your right about getting the smoke flavor, I've heard others mention that before and I kind of forgot that. When it comes right down to it, it's the smoke flavor of the meat that really counts. Thanks for reminding of that.

Welcome. Sorry you aren't going with a 'Stick Burner' . They have some nice Horizons at BPS. I think I'm right here, the 'Trailblaser" model has an Verticle and Horizontal cooking areas... could smoke hanging sausages then.

Just sayin'.....have fun and ...

Hello PaulDavid and welcome to SMF! I too have an MES 40 with window and absolutely love it. Pretty much set it and forget when paired with one of the AMAZEN PRODUCTS. I saw your concern about the heating element - I had the 20070211 Model and it developed some heating issues a couple months back - I contacted Masterbuilt and they immediately sent me a new heating element and it's easy to replace. That however didn't fix the problem, so I called them again and they sent me out a new body unit - Model 20070311. I certainly don't miss the smoke ring!

I have the 40" MES and love it....i get smoky flavor on all my meat and can even get a slight smoke ring every now and then
P.S. masterbuilt has a excellent customer service department and you can get the heating element from them....sometimes for only the price of shipping
