Use Lumberjack hickory or char hickory and smoke flavor problem solved...at least for me. Traeger blend from Costco, Pit Boss blend, BBQ delight all work but no flavor to me. Lumberjack Char Hickory one time and I was hooked...this is one area where I should have listened to all the members here raving but had to try for myself...and now I have experienced the difference :)

I get great smoke rings without an additional source of smoke.

Sure, pellet grills always produce great smoke rings. But smoke rings have very little correlation with smoke flavor, which is what many folks complain about. You can have a huge smoke ring with very little smoke flavor, and vice versa.

is there ample fresh air intake to keep pellet/dust burning?

There's plenty of air, but that doesn't mean plenty of oxygen. Pellet grills pull in air and circulate it with a fan. But that air passes through the firepot, where some of the O2 is going to be consumed. Pellet trays have a hard time staying lit with O2 is reduced, and I see most folks can't keep them going in a pellet grill. Tubes work better, but some folks still have a hard time with them. Really depends on the grill.

Question for the pellet families. If an additional smoke tube or tray is used for enhanced smoke flavor , is there ample fresh air intake to keep pellet/dust burning?

I have a Camp Chef DLX and a smoke tube and had to experiment a bit to find a sweet spot. Mine is all the way against the back wall on the little upper rack - stays lit every time. But the pellets MUST be ABSOLUTELY dry - I was trying to prep ahead of time and filled the tube and set it on the cold grill for a midnight start - even in Arizona, there was enough humidity to affect the pellets and it wouldn't stay lit.
