Howdy y'all! Just joined from Pasadena. I've got a Masterbuilt MPS 230S that I got for around $100 from Lowe's because it was a "damaged display". Contacted Masterbuilt to get a new knob (only "broken" piece) and they shipped me one for free even after disclosing how I got the smoker. That's impressive customer service!

So far I've only done one rack of ribs in it. I didn't have any issues controlling temperature, but my chips would burn off so quick. Seemed like every 20 minutes I was adding more. It was a little discouraging. So I joined here to find some tips and tricks/mods to help make it easier to smoke with. I look forward to learning more!

Congrats on your new smoker. I use wood chunks in my propane rig and usually get 1-2 hours without having to add anything else. Get some chunks and put a couple decent sized ones in there and I think you will be more happy with the results.

Thanks everyone!

Oddly Masterbuilt specifically says not to use chunks so I was avoiding it. But I'll definitely give it a shot. I honestly don't see what it could possibly hurt. I may pick up a pan to put on the chip tray as well because the one that came with this smoker has holes where the fire ignites the chips and burns them off quickly.

Thanks everyone! Did my first ever brisket (first anything to smoke too) on Saturday. Took 12.5 hours at 250*, this smoker holds temp really easily and I'm impressed. For the wood I used primarily mesquite wrapped in aluminum foil with some holes poked in it per recommendations I found on here, and I did one or two pouches that had apple wood in there.

I've got some fig wood from a tree I cut down that has been drying for well over a year, and had been put in an attic in Corpus Christi for 6 months. I've got some fresher fig wood and oak that I found free on Craigslist drying by my house.
