Mods: if this needs moved please feel free to do so. I wasn't sure if it should go here, in the build forum, or under ECB. So I took a chance.

So, a year or two ago, the wife went out and got me a smoker. Of sorts. I guess she had heard me complaining about wanting to smoke again. The one she got me:

Yep. A Masterbuilt 7 in 1 smoker/grill. I think some of the 7 in 1 is gas smoker, gas grill, Turkey fryer, charcoal grill, charcoal smoker. Dont know what the other two are. Kinda gave up on it, for a few reasons. Light off the propane, and you smell gas. Theres a recall on the hose. Ain't been able to get in touch with the company for a replacement yet. The rest of it seems decent, except for a few minor items. Tried to use it as a charcoal grill. I think that my charcoal had gotten damp, even though it didn't feel it. Here it is off the gas part:

And a pic of the top:

Top looks like something that can be easily worked with. The bottom part is what I'm worried about:

I need to figure out how to close up all the holes in it. Kinda hard to see, but there are even little slits at the water pan support bracket I'll have to deal with. That hole on the bottom is about 9.25" in diameter. I figure the easiest thing for me to do with this, is going to be to seal up that big hole somehow, and then put intakes similar to an UDS on it. And yes, there is a lip for the body to sit on. The lid has one too, so it can sit on the body. I'm thinking someone is saying run it like it is, and see how it does. Wait until you see the charcoal pan first. It will need mods even if nothing else does:

I'm thinking at a bare minimum, this pan needs a grate. Considering the design, I'm also thinking it needs holes in the sides for airflow. Not sure what size holes or how many, however.

My thoughts on this. Seal up the bottom, and get intakes installed to control airflow. Create airflow holes in the charcoal pan. Find the right size grill for the charcoal pan. And eventually add a thermometer at upper grate level. Any ideas or suggestions? I'm open to any and all ideas. Although, please keep in mind that other than cleaning it up, I wont be able to do anything with this for about a week, as I have to go out of town. Oh, diameter of the body is about 16.75" and grates are approximately 15.75"

For those of you that replied to my thread about what smoker to buy, I still plan to follow through on the wsm as well, unless I can get this modded well enough that I wont need the wsm. Thanks for looking at my wall of words, and thank you in advance for any and all suggestions.

Oh poo... I love the fact that you’re doing what you are...
agree with positive airflow control and a coal grate unless you have some misapprehension about using the gas burner for something other than a stand.

I was actually thinking more along the lines of using the gas burner, after replacing the hose of course, for a discada. I have an electric wok, and it works well, but it's not quite the same. I found a link in the discada cooking section to pick one up, and may be doing that a bit later this year. First priority is getting a smoker up and running, however.
