Well my thoughts are retire when you want to and can get by with 1/2 your income, that's what I did in November, I only regret having to get my shoulder fixed through my insurance rather than work, I hurt it while working but decided I couldn't do lite duty , the cost will be 0 due to good insurance, my wife carries it and works for a hospital group. she has a little over 2 years before she can retire but she loves her job and works from home, I figure my body is worn out from working hard physical labor for 47 years, She will work till she decides she has had enough; I had had enough lol. Hope our buddy that started this thread several years ago is doing great and enjoying it.

Loving my retirement which was accelerated due to the pandemic. The crazy thing is now I have time to actively manage my investments and making two to three times what I made working by trading covered call options and stocks. As long as I have my phone I can make money which means I am traveling pretty much every month. Since I can't take it with me I might as well enjoy it. Off to Vegas for a week for the Super Bowl and 3 U2 shows at the Sphere next week. Definitely much more fun than working.

Hard to believe a country like the USA does not have free health care.
I have a freind from Canada who is a Doctor working in Buffalo, NY as a Diagnostic and interventional radiologist. He cannot believe the BS he has to go through to get patiants the best care.
Here in Canada we have OHIP. Pays for pretty much everything I need. Pension has penifits that pay dental, medical and drug coverage. At 65 the government took over automatically my drug coverage.
Any difference my pension plan covers it.

Free health care may also have to due with the difference in populations.

Canada = 38+ million people as of 2021
USA = 331+ million people as of 2021

Chris

And if you get a referal from your Doctor the visit is covered under OHIP. Lots of my familey and friends have gone to the Mayo Clinic for help and never paid a cent.
Healthcare in Canada is not free, it is paid by the government via taxation. Not trying to make this political but single payer health care is a decision made by government. In the US the decision has been made not to provide single payer healthcare aka Medicare for all.

OH well just glad to live in Canada and if my taxes are a tad higher because of health care I am all for it. I could never afford the 1400 dollars a month some of you are stating.

Neither can a lot of folks here. They've looked into different ways of funding health care down here, but unfortunately none of them seem to add up in the end. Another big issue at least in my state is the lack of primary care doctors. Everyone seems to want to specialize in one field or another. That's where the money is I guess. Gone are the Doc Adams days.

Chris

Ya Doctors are in short supply where I live. Even Vets for our pets are in short supply.
Sister in law became a nurse and move to the States because she could make a lot more money. Same as my freind who is in Buffalo, NY as a Diagnostic and interventional radiologist. He makes way more money down there then here.

I could not be happier with early retirement. these have been the best years and looking forward to so many more. Highly recommend!

Affordable care insurance is kinda cheap when you have no job income/no W2.

VA Hospitals are a window into what Medicare for all looks like. Trust me you don’t want that

Actually Medicare is the model thus Medicare for all. The VA has its own set of issues to deal with and lack of funding is a big part of the problem. Instead of coming up with a solution, doing nothing seems to be working well, don't ya think?

As was mine (went part time in ‘19 for health reasons, but then with pandemic travel restrictions I was all but retired anyway). Would have preferred working a couple more years, but has been other silver linings with daughter and grandkids in same neighborhood.
A friend once told me to retire as soon as possible and you won’t regret it. Not working and still don’t have time for all the hobbies I enjoy.

If madicare (sic), ACA, Tricare, VA Benefits are supposedly so great why aren't thousands more of elite employees on those plans?
My wife ended up in forced retirement about a year ago. She actually liked her job but was only working to keep me insured as she was already on Medicare and I had a less than a year to go. Well, we learned that she could have retired earlier as the ACA supplemental for my salary alone was cheaper than the adder for me on her insurance. We have a pretty good financial reserve.
Moral of the story from previous posts, talk to an insurance person you trust and an investment person you really trust.

Over the past couple of years I’ve learned greatly about the health insurance battle you’re about to forgo. Find a local Medicare specailist and follow what they say. My now better half does this for a living and I don’t see how people try to get by without people like her

Likely because that is their best (only) option. If the elites can afford more or have too much income to qualify then they can pay their own way. Sort of like food. If you have the dough those Tomahawk Ribeyes look awfully tasty but if you have a choice between Oscar Mayer dogs or starving those dogs aint bad.

I have an insurance person I trust and I trust myself to manage my investments. Something to do in retirement.

I took an early retirement about 16 months ago and am loving every minute of it. Smarter people than me convinced me early on to invest as much as as possible into a 401K. After 34 years it added up. I was able to keep my medical for me and family. I just have to continue paying my share as long as I want to receive it.
