I have a 250 gallon tank and am deciding what to do with it.

Always thought rf was cool. Never cook that much though.

The firebox centered behind the doors looks more efficient.

I could cut it in half and make an upright smoker with half.

Pros and cons of each please.

Joe, morning and welcome to the forum....   Smoker design is a personal preference.... RF smokers are probably #1....  each has it pluses...  figure out what design you are going with and our experienced membership will help with any questions you may have.....   Dave

Went with reverse flow.  Here is some of what I have so far.

First Picture, went with odd sized doors for small time stuff that will be my main cooking to keep more heat in if I open door.

Tacked to trailer and fire box all sewed up.  6" stack

Front view, no door hinges, but interior strapping in place.

Upper and lower strap in place

Good enough to burn something in it.

Built a Charcoal Snake cause I think its a cool idea if it works.

.

It is removable and has 3" clearance to sides and bottom, 9" up.  Should make firebox last longer.

Top view.  1/2" plate makes it heavy.

Angled both ends on bottom to make install and removal easier.

Just to give an idea, it is 16" wide, 12" tall, and 30" deep.  The handles are sucker rod.

holds two big bags easy.

Went with a trailer jack on my intake damper.  Works good.

Full bore, No, I don't use lighter fluid, ever.  Damper is on opposite side of the door, for operation all in one spot, and fire will start on door side and crawl to the damper, Ashes don't block airflow.

Fire in the snake.

Working good, making the first corner.  Crawling like it should.

Hinges, Handles, and table in.

Same thing different view.

One or two don't hurt anything.  keeps production up.

Old latch on firebox.

New latch on firebox cams the door shut really tight.

Cam action pulls door in to fully seat strap seal.

Joe, evening.... Looking great.....  Did you have access to a RF calculator to figure dimensions and boring stuff like that ???

I like the charcoal snake... Should work very good...  The trailer jack is awesome on the air gate... Using sucker rod, I'm guessing you are from Texas or Oklahoma since you don't have your location filled out....  Or the coast somewhere 'cause your welder looks like WWII surplus from the shipyard....  Keep the pics coming.... I love learning watching folks build stuff....

I used the calculator all the way. Figured a 240 gallon tank due to the cutout, box is 36x24x22. Stack is 6"x34. Plate has 60 more sq in than firebox opening. I am waiting on thermometers, and have to scrounge grating and stuff for my racks. Then all my trailer accessories. Old welder is a 1956 shorthood that purrs. Started right up in the 25 degree weather the other day.

Thanks Joe, You wouldn't have a better picture of the "cam" set-up on the door closer would ya.... Looks interesting... Something I could learn from... Dave

I'm liking this build!  Some new ideas that really make sense. Details on the cam closure would be great! Can't wait to see it in action.

i will get some.  out of town now, when I get home I am gonna bust up that bumper crop of pecans and try to smoke them.  I will get some then.

Thermometers finally came in.  i put them in the oven to see if they all read the same, all 6 show 290 with oven set at 300, so I guess the oven os off a little.

Another picture of Firebox latch.

Firebox latch, Jamb side.

Again

and Again.

1" drain valve installed.  Lowest point in rf plate.  Plate makes about a 1" rise from firebox end to turnaround.  4x4x3/8 angle makes the turnaround, so if I want I can fill the plate with A LOT of water.
