I picked up some fresh Hatch chiles at Kroger to try roasting some for the first time. Thought about using the Vortex in my kettle. Should go quick but maybe I would be better off just spreading out the charcoal.
Any thoughts or opinions are welcome! I have no idea what I'm doing. Just read threads on here and watched a few videos online.
Thanks!

Spread out the charcoal. I roast them a bit and then hit them with a weed burner. This is a 30 gallon pit build for charcoal.

I've seen the weed burners being used and that was what gave my the idea of going straight over the vortex for a bit. I don't have a weed burner myself.
Do you leave the lid up while roasting them on your charcoal rig?

If you're using a kettle , just get your coals ashed over and pile them up on one side .
Direct roast over the coals to blister the skin , and flip around as needed . Once blistered , move to a paper bag or covered dish . The steaming afterward will soften the peppers .
I do them on the kettle , gas grill and under the broiler .

Thanks chopsaw chopsaw that's exactly the plan. Just wondered about the vortex after seeing videos of guys with a weed burner.

Roasting peppers don't need an insane heat, but they need a direct heat.
Don't know your cooker (assume 22" kettle) but spread the coal and blister as chopsaw chopsaw recommends. I do most of my cooks on a 16" Jumbo Joe but it blisters peppers too fast.
The standard 22" is used for this and smoking cheese these days.

I picked up one of these, along with a propane filler adaptor to refill the canisters, because it blows through them pretty fast. I bought it to start fires in my offset smoker, but man it makes quick work out'a roasting peppers.
No need to use charcoal, it roasts peppers with in seconds, and it's great for searing things cooked in a Sous vide bag, they are cheap.
