Apparently a coyote swam from main land San Francisco to Alcatraz (presumably getting away from people) since there this song dog is thriving on sea fowl and their nests. In just 2 weeks he has gotten “plump” and looks to be living its best life although alone.

Here is a link to the story.

They filmed a black bear that swam all the way out to one of the islands on the Atchafalaya Wildlife Managment area. This island is about 1.2 miles from the closest land mass, and has a very healthy rabbit, bird and deer population. The island is small, can't be much larger than where that coyote is. That bear got very fat... until he pushed all the deer off and they swam to shore. Then he left. The bear had a tracking collar on him. He traveled down the mississippi river to the Atchafalaya river and followed that to the gulf. This female's home territory is northern Arkansas...in the mountains.

Here in the SF bay area we have a bunch of stories about coyotes going places we wouldn't think possible. There was another one which swam to Angel Island, and back. Same thing, expanding it's territory and looking for food.

There is an estimated 125-150 coyotes living in San Francisco proper. I guess we're getting accustomed to having them around and don't find these kinds of stories of coyotes doing things in the the bay area all that strange anymore.
