Are you sure you are getting ALL the seeds and membrain out of them. Mine aren't hot at all if I get all that out. Now if I accidentally leave some in, they can get warm.
I think I am,but I'm going to make them again and I'll make sure that I clean them out .
I never split them before,I always cut the tops off and cleaned them out.
This time I'm going to slice them in half and try it.

Craig I think its easier to get most the membrane out when you split them. I cut the membrane out then run my thumb nail down the ribs. They turn out almost sweet off the smoker. For the other half the batch I leave alittle more in and stick them with a pick so that I will know the difference.
