18-20 gauge should work for the door. Building a fridge is fun. When I'm at work 14 days a month all I do is want to smoke stuff. I haven't got around to posting my build, not too savvy at uploading pics
Search mailbox mod to get an idea of what it is. The wood chips or pellets aren't going to supply a lot of heat so you will need a heat source. Electric, gas or charcoal. Once you establish which heat source you're going to use, then you can figure out how you're going to install everything...
Think your okay on the paint. It's probably enamel. You could use the mailbox mod or something like the smokedaddy. They are fun to build for sure. Which ever way you decide to go, make sure you cut the hole so it will go through the outer and inner box.
Cut the hole already. However I do still have the cut outs. Sounds like a good multifunctional idea. Might have to see if I can do something like that on my fridge. Its a lot like smokednarwhals fridge. Appreciate the feedback Mr. Mike.
When I bought my smokedaddy, I got a pamphlet with it that has a pic of scooters build. Very nice. I've almost read every fridge build in here. Great info

Stove rope gasket would handle the temp for sure. Mcmaster carr has the high temp rubber kind. Not sure if they deliver to your neck of the woods though. Amazon also
I've read about finned strip heaters needing a fan or something that creates a draft around it so they don't burn up. If this is true, could I drill a 2" intake behind it with a ball valve to help with that or would it be too close or the heat causing the ball valve to stop functioning properly...
My name is Mike. Fiirst time to join a forum. Work in the oilfield 2 on 2 off and spend a lot of time dreaming about what I'm going to cook when I get home, but don't always get around to it. Hopefully joining y'all will get me in the right direction
