    I was watching the smoke stream in the fire box the other day and started thinking on a horizontal smoker the smoker and heat would seam to come in from one side and cool as it rises toward to other side vs having hot air rises as it fills the smoker I'm thinking this may give a vertical smoker...

    Do what you like there is no wrong answer here as long as you can get your desired temperature and maintained it this is simply a matter of preference I prefer wood i go to my back yard and pick up what I need for my burn Others like coal or charcoal

    I run wood, only except when its winter. Then I use coal to start my wood . I have never had a problem with bad smoke or low heat.

    what was the average temp out side when you fired your smoker ?? out side temperature will affect performance. if you want to smoke in the winter you will need much more heat . I would try a slider to let more air in or try some wood if you have the room

    oak should be pretty forgiving if it's bitter open the exhaust you'll like the oak I rarely use anything else try some pear or apricots/apple if you want a softer flavor
