Alright so I was itching to try out the new basket today so fired up the Lang for a test run and a few Brats for supper. I started way early to get s feel for how it was going to run.
I started the fire with about 2/3 of a chimney of lump charcoal. And then added a couple of smallish splits...
Hey guys I know it's been a while, but I finally got around to building my basket. I used a bit of everyone's advice, ideas and experience and this is what I came up with....
Have had a chance to try it put yet.
Ok guys now I have a new problem. It looks like something is boring holes in my wood. I didn't notice any holes when I brought the wood home. They seem to just go straight in and are about 1/4 diameter. What does it look like to you guys? Is this a major problem? The pic shows the same piece...

Thanks for chiming in, it's always good to hear the experience of someone using the same smoker. I have definitely noticed the hot spot you mention. I only really use 2/3...

My existing rack is about 12 1/2" square. Would 6 inches for the bottom of the V be about right? With probably 4 inch tall sides?
I don't...
I think I'm going to do exactly that to start. I will probably do like JckDanls 07 said and use all expanded metal to start with, then I can cut some solid peices to add in on different sides to experiment a bit.
I agree with civilsmoker, this is a great discussion! And I'm open to all ideas. The number one thing I'm getting from everyone is that my biggest problem is that I haven't been able to keep the coal bed together.
Since my air intakes are on the sides of my firebox would it make more sense to...
How do you think just making kind of a \_/ to set over my existing tray would work. Solid sides like you said with expanded metal across the back, but no additional bottom. And with the V, it would look like you can only lay splits one direction is it not necessary to criss cross splits with...
