Thanks for the replies. I ended up picking up 3 of these...will be trying them shortly. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BJB1JZKQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thanks SmokingEdge. I'm about 650ft. I'll look in to the dust too. I noticed a lot of people using it, the pellets were an easy grab at the hardware store. I do have my eyes open for some old cast iron for the summer.
Thanks,I'll look at the smoke tube! I'm a little surprised that there is not enough air with a 4x10 intake vent right below the burner. When I run the burner hotter (210), the pellets do burn, but almost too fast. That's what is causing a bit of confusion. Any specific smoke tubes to look...
Hi,
I'm building a DIY temp monitor for my smokehouse and looking for suggestions on Type-K insertion probes. I'm planning on having 3-4 so I can monitor several pieces of meat at once. I need probes with bare leads or thermocouple plugs and NOT the 1/4" connector. The only one I'm finding...
Hi,
I'm trying to get my smokehouse dialed in and having some smoke gen issues. I'm using an AMPS for smoke gen. Here is what is happening. When I cold smoke (no heat other than AMPS), all works well. When I run the burner on low (house around 150-165) the AMPS seems to not create as much...
Thanks Chopsaw. I fired it yesterday before the post and ran it at 230 for about 90 minutes. I'm more worried about exposed fibers floating around than anything. I think I'll skim coat it this spring, already too cold here. Wondering what I can do in the meantime?
Thanks for the feedback on the durarock. Short of starting over, and tearing it all out, any thoughts on encapsulating it in mortar or something else. I didn't realize that it had fiberglass in it. I certainly see the risk if it's exposed. Wondering what I can do to cover it/encapsulate it...
Thanks for the kind words!
I'm planning on adding 3 thermo-couples at different heights (low, med, high) in the cabinet for temp readings. I was looking for a old school dial thermometer, but none have probes long enough to mount though the door or walls. I'll add a exterior box to house...
Thanks for all the input on my questions on heat sources. I thought I'd start a thread with pics of my build. Sorry if I don't have the photos in here right, I tried to link them but can't figure out how to use the site.
Still more work to be done, but it's coming together. I both hot and...
Thanks for all the help on my build - Pics are coming as my wife has been taking them along the way.
Follow up question on venting. I'm looking at using 4x10 registers on the side wall for venting vs a 6" pipe out the top. I was planning on 1 register low for intake and one at the top for...
Thanks SmokingEdge! I will definitely call Tejas Smokers, I've looked at their stuff before.
I'm not a competition cook, and perfect isn't the enemy of good here. My first 15+ years of smoking was an old offset wood burner, no automation but made some really great meat.
I'm not looking...
Thanks for all the feedback and the super awesome detail on electric heating. As much as I want to use electric, I'm seeing a few challenges:
- I would have to run an extension cord 50-75 feet across the yard, and in the winter that would be a pain with snow.
- The thought of blowing a...
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't have 220v near where the smokehouse is going.
I've looked at the propane burners, and they look like they would work. Is there a way to use a temp controller/PID with propane? I'd be open to that. I'm really focused on temp control.
I'm looking to build a smokehouse similar to this one. I'm shooting for interior dimensions of 36" wide, 30" deep, and 4-5' high. The walls would have 1.5" foam board insulation with concrete board on the inside sides and bottom (30" high) and plywood at the top. Floor and ceiling would also...
New member and new to cold smoking. I'm looking to cold smoke cured pork bellies. I don't have a smokehouse yet, but am wondering if I can use an A-MAZE-N smoker on the bottom (coal) rack of a Weber Kettle and have the belly on the top rack. I'm in MN and it's still cold here, so my goal is...
