Thanks, i started out drilling the back cover thinking something internally was damaged. I traced all wires and found the heat element was short to ground... in hindsight, i wouldnt have needed to take the back off... but it is what it is, and now i have access to the smoker if i want to modify it.
If you skip to 8:10 i show how to remove the cover. The cover is secured with rivets, all you need to do is drill out the rivets as shown in the video. Then at 9:10 i have a simple wire diagram.

My heating element went out too, i replaced it and it worked. One interesting thing is instead of an open circuit, it tripped the breaker shorting to ground. I documented why and drew out the wiring diagram:
