PBC & Royal Oak Briquettes - temp issues with RO?

I have been cooking on my PBC for a while now and until yesterday I have been using Kingford like they recommend. Generally, I fill the basket with Kingsford blue bag (KBB) and light about a half chimney of Kingsford competition (now professional) and wait 12-15 min and then dump this onto the...

Question/Help with new Pit Barrel Cooker

The less time the lid / bars are out the better..if I am switching meats and need to re-position i will usually put the bars back in and put the lid on until I am ready to QUICKLY change the meat. If its open 5 min total that's probably okay but any longer you will spike (at least for a little...

Question/Help with new Pit Barrel Cooker

Not sure if you ever got an answer but as a PBC user I NEVER leave the lid off after lighting. I will fill the basket about 2/3 full.. pull out ~30 coals (it really does not matter EXACTLY what number), light them, wait 12-15 min (not much longer, they might not look totally ashed over, who...

Is this smoker a total waste?

So I did a 5.5 lb pork shoulder on it and it smoked no problem for approx 4.5 hours. At that point it started to get hard to keep heat as the ash tray was totally full and new coals being added (semi-lit) didn't last as long or fully ignite. I think if I drill some holes into the charcoal pan...

Is this smoker a total waste?

Thanks for the info guys.  I will give it a try this weekend and see how it goes (1 rack of ribs maybe) and if its bad I'll just toss it. It was only $40. I might just pop for the WSM (14 inch maybe). Plenty of way better reviews and its a proven smoker. Being cheap never works out.

Is this smoker a total waste?

Big hello from Wisconsin! First post here and wanted to get an opinion on a first smoker. I have been BBQing on a charcoal Weber forever now and made some fantastic meals but wanted to get more into smoking. I have searched the market over and read all sorts of reviews on every type of smoker...
