    I would guess they help some.  With the insulation, I can hold my hand on the smoker lid, so there has to be a reduced heat loss.  But I still get a 25 to 30 degree heat differential across the grates.  I do use a water pan on the fire box side to adsorb some of the heat spikes.  The real reason...

    Thanks Frank.  I looked up some of the posts from Cliff and you.  Interesting that higher smoking temperatures are suggested.  I think I'll give that a try next time, it may help with stick burning.
